I really feel what you say about Catholicism and the bad taste it can leave in your mouth. Having been raised a catholic, I have always hate its "constructed religion" aspect and yet, find myself fascinated by catholic imagery, churches, old prayer books etc...!
I have always harbored a fascination for "high church", too. For some of us, we just turn away from the church and never look back but in folks like you and me, there's something in the system that calls to us and it might mean that we're meant to be there. But the church, as a body, is very much *of man* and its machinery is poisonous to gnosis. Christian gnosticism is quite beautiful and is, in my opinion, the way that we were meant to interact with the divine but that's a post for another day.
